The Republic of Djibouti, lying on the northeastern part of the African Continent, covers an area of 20,000 square km and has a population of 740,000 belonging to two ethnic groups: Somali and Adar. Other ethnic groups include the Arab, Ethiopian and European. The national religion is Muslim. French and Arabic are the official languages. The national capital is Djibouti. The current president is Ismail Umar Guelleh.
Diplomatic ties between China and Djibouti have been developing smoothly since the two countries established diplomatic relations on Jan. 8, 1979. Xu Jialu, vice chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress, visited Djibouti in 2002. President Guelleh visited China in 2001. Bilateral trade reached 111.99 million U.S.dollars in 2005.
