Snow, ice plague western Balkans
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-02-07 07:39

Snow and ice continued to obstruct travel in the western Balkans, as roads on the interior of Montenegro were largely closed on Monday while hundreds of villages in central Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) remain cut off under a heavy blanket of snow, according to local media reports.

Low temperatures and unrelenting snowfall that measure over a meter in many places closed the main road artery in Montenegro from the capital of Podgorica to Mojkovac. The airport at Podgorica was also closed once again due to snow.

In the neighboring BiH, the mountainous communities surrounding Sarajevo remain isolated due to accumulated snowfall and with temperatures that dip toward minus 20 degrees Celsius.

The town of Zvornik, in the east of the country near the River Drina, is said to be without electricity. BiH Army helicopters were used to deliver good to residents of Fazlagica Kula, near the town of Gacko.

Meteorologists in the region have offered no comfort to citizens of the embattled western Balkans, forecasting more snow, extremely cold temperatures and strong winds in the coming days.
