Georgia has coldest day in 40 years
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-02-12 16:20

Georgia on Saturday experienced its coldest day in almost four decades, the country's central meteorological agency said.

Tbilisi, the capital city, registered a temperature of minus nine degrees Celsius, the lowest in nearly 40 years, it said.

Meanwhile, the temperatures in some parts of the country plummeted to minus 20 degrees Celsius, and the Caucasian mountainous areas in the north would expect low temperatures of 25 degrees Celsius below zero.

The agency warned that the cold snap would continue through Sunday and the weather conditions would change for the better after Feb. 18.

Two men, both reportedly homeless, died of hypothermia and frostbites overnight in hospitals respectively in Tbilisi and western Georgia, local media reported on Saturday.

Snowfalls stopped on Saturday in most parts of Georgia, where the authorities had instructed public schools to shut down for three days.
