An 8-centimeter nail pierced the eyeball of a man in Nanjing and became lodged in his head. Fortunately, the nail missed all the important blood vessels in the brain, reports the People's Daily.

The accident occurred when the man, surnamed Yang, from Hebei, was refurnishing the floor at his home towards the end of last month. He felt something in his left eye and heard a noise when he was cutting material for the floor, and there was a little blood, but, as he was not in much pain, he did not give the irritation much notice.

The next morning he woke up with a serious headache and found his eye had swollen up. After going to a hospital, he was told by doctors that he had a nail stuck in his eye. The nail was 8 cm long, and had entered Yang's head through the rim of the eye.

"The nail missed all the important vessels and nerves and there is no bleeding in the brain. This is rare. The patient is very lucky," said his doctor, who added that the nail flew into Yang's eye at high speed.

The doctor removed the nail in a four-hour operation on Yang.
