Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-01-03 17:49

Inflation in Sri Lanka ended the year on a positive note with an average of 6.7 percent, the Central Bank said in a statement here Tuesday.

The Colombo Consumers Price Index dropped to 4.9 percent in December from 6.2 percent in January 2011 and the annual average rate of inflation was kept at the mid-single digit level of 6.7 percent, the statement said.

The annual average core inflation reached 6.9 percent by the year end.

The annual average increase of 6.7 percent was blamed mainly on raising prices of food and nonalcoholic beverages, which increased by 8.8 percent.

The weighted average prices of vegetables increased by 7.4 percent in 2011, compared to that of 2010.

The Central Bank cited increasing prices for key food commodities and oil and floods at the start of the year as major reasons for the inflation.
