Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-02-02 18:35

A further 177,470 jobs were lost in Spain in January, according to figures released by the Spanish National Institute of Statistics (INE) on Thursday.

The total number of people out of work in the country now stands at 4,599,829, which is a 4.01-percent rise from December last year.

There was also an 8.72-percent rise in the number of people who lost their jobs between January last year and this year.

All sectors of the economy suffered, including service, construction and industry.

Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy said the only way to stem the loss of jobs was by making the job market more flexible. Rajoy's cabinet is expected to approve a labor reform package either on Friday or the coming week.
