Nikkei opens sharply lower on downgraded credit rating of France

Tokyo stocks opened sharply lower Monday with the key Nikkei index down 1.27 percent after Standard & Poor's Ratings Services downgraded France's credit status last week.

At 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average lost 107.93 points from Friday to 8,392.09.

The broader Topix index contracted 8.60 points, or 1.17 percent, to 726.00.
