Tokyo stocks fell sharply Monday with the key Nikkei index down 1.43 percent after Standard & Poor' s Ratings Services' downgrading of France's credit status last week.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average lost 121.66 points from Friday at 8,378.36. The broader Topix index contracted 9.36 points, or 1.27 percent, lower at 725.24.
The sectors leading the decline included the sea transport, insurance and securities sectors. The sole gainers were the construction and metal products sectors.
