Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-03-06 13:25

Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda said on Monday that his country is willing to "wisely" solve the territorial disputes with Russia in a telephone talks with Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, who won a victory in Sunday's presidential election.

Russian presidential candidate and incumbent Prime Minister Vladimir Putin won the election with about 64 percent of the vote, the Russian Central Election Commission (CEC) said Monday.

Noda extended his congratulations on Putin for winning presidential election, and hoped more cooperation would come to deepen bilateral ties when Putin takes office, according to a statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan (MOFA).

The two prime ministers agreed to develop bilateral cooperation on fields including the political and economic ones, it said.

At an annual rally in February, Noda said the government would continue to make steady and determined efforts to press ahead with negotiations with Russia on the issue of the Russian-held islands off Hokkaido.

The disputed isles, including Etorofu, Kunashiri, Shikotan and the Habomai islet group, were seized by the Soviet Union following Japan's surrender in World War II. The islands are called Northern Territories by Japan and Southern Kurils by Russia.
