U.S. President Barack Obama has called Congressional leaders after winning reelection, discussing the legislative agenda for the remainder of the year, the White House said Wednesday.

A White House statement said overnight and Wednesday morning in Chicago, the U.S. state of Illinois, Obama phoned Speaker of the House of Representatives John Boehner, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and Minority Leader of the House Nancy Pelosi to "talk about the legislative agenda for the remainder of the year."

"The President reiterated his commitment to finding bipartisan solutions to: reduce our deficit in a balanced way, cut taxes for middle class families and small businesses and create jobs," said the statement.

Obama told the Congressional leaders he believed "the American people sent a message in yesterday's election that leaders in both parties need to put aside their partisan interests and work with common purpose to put the interests of the American people and the American economy first."

Obama won a second term Tuesday after winning a series of swing states, beating Republican challenger Mitt Romney. The Republicans continued to hold on to their House majority, and the Democrats also defended their majority in the Senate.
