Last Updated(Beijing Time):2005-03-12 13:48

The State Forestry Administration has publicized its 2004 report on the situation of tree planting in the country to mark China's Arbor Day on Saturday.

The report says measures being taken to improve the ecological environment have proved effective with 7.2 million hectares of land being successfully afforested last year.

The report also states China's tree cover is growing steadily, with coverage exceeding 18 percent of the country. Meanwhile, the general quality of forests has also improved.

Another finding reveals that the construction of China's ecological environment is entering a key phase of a balance.

In addition, 550 million Chinese people voluntarily joined in planting trees in 2004.
