BEIJING, Nov 28 (China Economic Net) - The Forum on Intelligence Society Development and Governance was held on Monday in Beijing, bringing together representatives from local governments, universities, and the corporate sector to discuss pathways and strategies for building intelligent societies in China.

The event was co-organized by multiple institutions, including the Institute of Intelligence Society Governance of Tsinghua University, to achieve three primary objectives: advancing applied research in artificial intelligence (AI) through social experiments, facilitating the exchange of information on recent developments, and nurturing specialized talent for the governance of intelligence society.

Professor Gu Binglin, former president of Tsinghua University, emphasized that promoting intelligence society governance is a transformative endeavor with profound implications for human history. The Institute of Intelligence Society Governance has made significant strides in areas such as concept innovation, action planning, talent cultivation, standard-setting, and academic research, solidifying its position as a domestic leader in the field.

Zhang Xiaogang, former chairman of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), underscored the importance of standards in shaping the digital world. He pointed out that safeguarding ethical principles amid AI advancements is paramount, and robust standards are essential to achieving this. A national working group jointly established by Tsinghua University and China National Institute of Standardization has already initiated five national standard projects, which focus on AI social experiments and the governance of generative AI.

Professor Su Jun, Dean of the Institute of Intelligence Society Governance of Tsinghua University, echoed Albert Einstein's sentiment that technology must ultimately serve humanity’s fundamental interests. He urged all sectors of society to collaborate on theoretical research and practical solutions to tackle the complex issue.

During the forum, the Research on Intelligence Society Development and Governance (2024) was released. The report covers the latest advancements in AI technology, the risks and challenges facing an intelligent society, analyses of governance case studies, and evaluations of large language models. It highlights China's achievements and practical experiences in intelligent social governance, providing valuable insights for the field.
