BEIJING, Mar. 14 (China Economic Net) - Ethiopia and China celebrated the 55th anniversary of their diplomatic relations on March 13 with a grand event in Beijing, themed "55 Years: A Legacy of Strong Partnership for Shared Prosperity."
The event, held at the Ethiopian Embassy in China, was attended by Chinese Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Chen Xiaodong, Ethiopian Ambassador to China Tefera Derbew Yimam, and Cameroonian Ambassador to China Martin Mpana, along with diplomats from over 60 countries, including Algeria, Kenya, Indonesia, Pakistan, and the UAE. Distinguished guests from both China and the international community were also present.
Vice Foreign Minister Chen Xiaodong emphasized the evolution of China-Ethiopia relations, which have progressed from a "Comprehensive Cooperation Partnership" to a "Comprehensive Strategic Cooperation Partnership," and now to an "All-Weather Strategic Partnership." China has become Ethiopia's largest trading partner, the foremost source of investment, and the leading contractor for infrastructure projects. The two countries have strengthened cooperation in traditional sectors such as infrastructure, manufacturing, and coffee trade, significantly benefiting both nations and their peoples.
In his keynote speech, Ambassador Tefera emphasized that the elevation of Ethiopia-China relations to an "All-Weather Strategic Partnership" clearly demonstrates the ongoing and deepening cooperation between the two countries across various sectors. He highlighted the continuous growth of bilateral trade and investment, which strengthens the ties between the two nations.
Since December 1, 2024, China has implemented a zero-tariff treatment for 100% tariff lines for goods from all the least developed countries with which it has diplomatic relations, including 33 African nations.
Tefera noted that this policy will facilitate the entry of more high-quality African products into the Chinese market and further promote trade exchanges between China and Africa. He praised China's increasing economic openness and its commitment to strengthening relations with developing countries, which has created broader development opportunities for Africa, including Ethiopia.
He also emphasized that China is Ethiopia's largest trading partner, providing Ethiopian products such as coffee, leather, and other agricultural goods with enhanced access to the Chinese market. "Ethiopia and China have built a relationship based on mutual trust, respect, and cooperation. From infrastructure development to trade and investment, our partnership has made remarkable progress, delivering tangible benefits to our people."
