The fifth China International Consumer Products Expo (CICPE), held on the tropical island province of Hainan, was not only the biggest edition yet but also the clearest signal to date that China is doubling down on its strategy of high-standard opening-up, while confidently inviting the world to engage with its ever-expanding consumer market.

What began as a modest showcase of consumer goods has rapidly evolved into a cornerstone of China’s external economic diplomacy and an emblem of its economic resilience. With over 1,700 companies and more than 4,100 brands from 71 countries and regions, CICPE 2025 has rewritten the playbook for what international consumer expos can achieve. It did not just draw participation - it radiated confidence.

Foreign corporate heavyweights-Fortune Global 500 companies, luxury brands, and niche innovators alike-converged in Hainan to tap into the dynamism of the Chinese market. The United States brought the largest national presence this year, with 29 companies and 40 brands participating. The United Kingdom, honored as the guest country, doubled its footprint from last year with 27 companies and 53 brands, spanning fashion, health, beauty, and homeware.

For many foreign enterprises facing an unpredictable global environment, CICPE offered clarity. Officials and top executives repeatedly expressed enthusiasm for cooperating with China, citing not only the scale of its market but also the credibility of its long-standing commitment to openness. With the Hainan Free Trade Port nearing full operational closure by the end of 2025, the expo offered a real-time glimpse into what a more integrated, liberalized Chinese market could look like.

China’s retail landscape in 2024 tells a compelling story-not merely in numbers but in nuance. Total retail sales soared to an eye-catching 48.8 trillion yuan, with per capita consumption surpassing 28,000 yuan, marking a respectable 5.1 percent increase from the previous year. What’s unfolding is not just growth but a fundamental recalibration: a “structural transformation” steering the world’s second-largest economy toward a more service-oriented model of consumption.

China’s opening-up strategy is neither passive nor symbolic. The Hainan Free Trade Port (HFTP), of which CICPE is a signature initiative, is poised to become one of the most significant free trade projects in the Asia-Pacific. The port’s full customs closure, scheduled for the end of 2025, will streamline trade processes, reduce barriers, and enhance global linkages.

If there is a central takeaway from CICPE 2025, it is that China does not see itself as an insular power walling off its markets. On the contrary, it is positioning itself as a bridge-a hub where global supply chains, consumer trends, and innovation ecosystems converge. This year’s expo saw the participation of countries ranging from Slovakia and Kazakhstan to Brazil and Armenia, some of which debuted their national pavilions for the first time.

At a time when many developed economies are struggling with inflation, stagnation, or political dysfunction, China offers a different narrative-of steady policy evolution, expanding middle-class consumption, and openness to global cooperation. The CICPE embodies this narrative in ways few other platforms can. China’s economy is not immune to the challenges facing the global system. But it is increasingly clear that Beijing is responding with confidence, adaptability, and a willingness to lead where others hesitate.

The fifth China International Consumer Products Expo was not merely an event-it was a statement. It affirmed China’s emergence as the world’s premier consumer market. It demonstrated that globalization, when nurtured by pragmatic policies and institutional resilience, can still deliver mutual prosperity. And it proved that in a time of uncertainty, China is prepared not just to weather the storm-but to offer others safe harbor. The CICPE 2025 reminds us that the future of consumption, innovation, and openness is being quietly but decisively shaped in China.
