As the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021–2025) draws nearer to its close, China's digital infrastructure stands as a testament to its ambition and execution. Spearheaded by the National Data Administration, the nation has erected 4.55 million 5G base stations and connected 226 million gigabit broadband households as of June 2025 - unrivaled scale that positions China comfortably at the front of global digital infrastructure expansion.

Equally striking is China's surge in computing capacity, now second in the world, an invisible yet critical engine powering modernization across sectors. Underpinning this progress is sustained investment in digital infrastructure, propelling the information and communications technology (ICT) sector into a cohesive, high-performing ecosystem. This industrial synergy not only fortifies supply chains but stimulates innovation across the board, from chip design to terminal devices.

This infrastructure is not built merely for connectivity - it is the foundation of new economic frontiers. The combination of widespread network access and affordable bandwidth cultivates fertile ground for disruptive models: online retail, remote education, telemedicine, and "5G+ industrial internet" have all sprouted with vigor in this environment. For rural communities, the intersection of 5G and e-commerce provides more than convenience - it offers livelihood transformation, as mobile devices become instruments of income and empowerment.

At the core of this digital leap lies a series of breakthroughs in strategic technologies. China has accelerated development of the integrated circuit industry, nurtured domestic operating systems like HarmonyOS, now crossing the threshold of over 1.19 billion devices, and claimed 60% of global artificial intelligence patent filings. These milestones signify far more than technical progress; they reflect a foundational shift toward independence and leadership in essential digital domains.

Data is both the fuel and the frontier of China's digital economy. By the end of 2024, the number of data-related enterprises nationwide surpassed 400,000, and the data industry swelled to a market size of 5.86 trillion yuan, a remarkable 117% jump from the close of the 13th Five-Year Plan period.

Meanwhile, the nation's total data output surged to an astonishing 41.06 zettabytes, and the core digital economy contributed close to 10% of GDP - figures that affirm data's integral role in economic development.

The next challenge lies in harnessing this digital backbone to unleash productivity, equity, and global competitiveness. Networked connectivity must evolve into networked intelligence, especially across targeted innovation areas like smart manufacturing, precision agriculture, healthcare, and logistics, where pilot scenarios and smart applications number in the dozens already.

Moreover, the data industry's trajectory points to emerging cluster economies - regional hubs that concentrate computing, analytics, and R&D capabilities. Such clustering can catalyze cross-sector collaboration, accelerate technological diffusion, and amplify economic spillovers.

Investing in domestic integrated circuits and operating systems positions China not merely as a consumer of advanced technologies but an originator. As the HarmonyOS ecosystem continues to expand, it supports an intertwining of mobile, IoT, and industrial devices - a digital spine reaching into homes, factories, and universities alike.

And yet, this prologue is just the beginning. As an integrated digital economy takes shape, the true test will be its ability to generate sustainable growth, elevate living standards across both urban and rural China, and assert China's role as a global leader in the new digital era.

The digital architecture is in place. The next chapter lies in deepening integration, linking infrastructure with innovation, data with dividends, and connectivity with opportunity. In that chapter, China has already turned the pen.
