YINCHUAN, Aug. 30 (China Economic Net) - The seventh China-Arab States Expo, scheduled from August 28 to 31 and held in Yinchuan, Ningxia, opened a special session on high-quality meteorological development under the theme "Deepening China-Arab Meteorological Cooperation for a Climate-Resilient Future."

Representatives from national meteorological and hydrological services of the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Comoros, Yemen, Iraq, Egypt, Morocco, Qatar and Libya, along with experts from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), universities, enterprises and research institutes, gathered to chart new paths for China-Arab cooperation.

During the session, the China Meteorological Administration (CMA) announced three major initiatives: the joint preparation of a Meteorological Satellite Data Application Center with the National Center of Meteorology of United Arab Emirates ; the launch of the "MAZU" Early Warning System program with Jordan and other countries; and the development of AI-driven meteorological models in cooperation with the Egyptian Meteorological Authority. These measures mark a step forward in institutionalized collaboration on early warning systems and climate resilience.

To meet the UAE's needs in satellite remote sensing and capacity building, CMA and the UAE National Center of Meteorology will focus on data-sharing frameworks, technical pathways for remote sensing applications, and joint talent training. A memorandum on satellite cooperation signed in April laid the groundwork for this project. CMA's Fengyun satellite data platform already serves 17 Arab countries with more than 40 products across four categories, and has provided tailored, high-frequency monitoring for Gulf states for years.

Abdulla Al Mandous, Director General of the National Center of Meteorology, and Permanent Representative of UAE with WMO, commended China's efforts through the "MAZU" initiative in advancing the UN's Early Warnings for All program, noting that China provides vital support to global climate resilience and expressing hope for further cooperation in artificial intelligence and remote sensing technologies.

The "MAZU" early warning system program, co-developed with Jordan and other partners, will tailor solutions to local needs, offering customizable, deployable, and sustainable packages. Built on China's open "MAZU" framework, CMA has already developed a cloud-based early warning system that integrates high-performance computing, Fengyun satellites, numerical weather prediction models, AI-based forecasting models, and early warning algorithms to enable effective disaster alerts across diverse scenarios.

Artificial intelligence has emerged as a global strategic priority for meteorological services. Leveraging its expertise, CMA will work with Egypt to develop and apply AI-powered meteorological models to strengthen forecasting and early warning capabilities, advancing the use of AI in the Arab region's meteorological sector.

Chen Zhenlin, head of CMA, said CMA will continue to advance the "MAZU" initiative within an open, shared cooperation framework, promoting joint R&D, pilot projects, and localized capacity building to enhance disaster prevention and mitigation for the benefit of regional communities.
