Charred human remains were found in a burned-out cabin where fugitive ex-Los Angeles police officer Christopher Dorner barricaded himself in a standoff with police, local police said Wednesday.
Investigators would use forensic analysis to identify whether the remains were Dorner's, San Bernardino County Sheriff's department said.
Dorner, 33, was found in the county's Big Bear area in Southern California Tuesday afternoon, the sixth day of a manhunt that started when he went on a rampage of revenge against former police colleagues, which allegedly included killing a couple in Irvine and a Riverside police officer and injuring two others.
Police finally tracked him down after he was suspected of burglarizing a home, tying up a couple and stealing their car.
Department spokesperson Jodi Miller said Tuesday: "The suspect fled into the forest and barricaded himself inside a cabin. A short time later, there was an exchange of gunfire between law enforcement and the suspect."
The cabin caught fire after the shootout, during which one officer was killed and another wounded.
Dorner was sacked by the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) in 2009.
A statement on what is believed to be Dorner's Facebook page criticized racism in the LAPD.
The police search has stretched from Riverside to Corona to Big Bear to Point Loma in San Diego, a large area of Southern California. They found Dorner's abandoned car in flames Thursday in Big Bear.
