A gun scare was reported Thursday on the campus of the University of Rhode Island. Police were still investigating.

According to the Providence Journal, the main campus of the university was under lockdown Thursday after a man with a gun was reported. The school said it is sending alerts to all students and faculty to stay within their buildings. The building where a gunman was reported had been evacuated.

There were no reports of shots been fired at this point, and the state police said they have no evidence so far of an active shooter.

The University of Rhode Island is the principal public research university in the state of Rhode Island. Its main campus was located in Kingston, and enrolls about 20,000 students.
