India's ruling Congress party leader Rahul Gandhi has ruled out that he is in the race for the prime minister's post, a year-and-a-half ahead of the general elections in this country.

"Asking me whether you want to be the prime minister is a wrong question. The prime minister's post is not my priority. I believe in long-term politics," the local media quoted 42-year-old Gandhi as telling his party's Members of Parliament (MPs) in a rare free- wheeling chat here Tuesday.

His remarks came despite Gandhi being widely tipped to be the Congress' prime ministerial candidate for the 2014 general elections and his recent elevation as the party's Vice President, the party's second-in-command after his mother and party President Sonia Gandhi.

Gandhi has also ruled out getting married. "If I get married and have children, then I will become a status quoist and will be concerned about bequeathing my position to my children," he added.

The Congress party-led United Progressive Alliance government is embroiled in a series of corruption and is expected to face a tough general election.
