Malicious code from Chinese Internet Protocol (IP) address caused network paralysis at Nonghyup Bank, Seoul's communications watchdog said Thursday.

After analyzing Nonghyup's computer network system, the Korea Communications Commission (KCC) found that Chinese IP address accessed the management server for vaccine software distribution at the lender, generating malicious code.

A single entity was estimated to attack networks at three local broadcasters, including KBS, MBC and YTN, as well as three banks, including Shinhan, NongHyup and Jeju, because the affected institutions have in common the fact that the malicious code damaged hard disks and held a unique character string.

The announcement came after computer networks at local TV stations and banks were simultaneously stopped at around 2 p.m. Wednesday. The cyber attack crippled around 32,000 personal computers (PCs) and servers at the six institutions.

The Financial Services Commission (FSC), South Korea's financial regulator, said that all networks for operation purpose at the affected banks, except for some branches of Nonghyup, were mended to operate normally as of 11:00 a.m..
