At least two persons were killed and 14 others sustained injuries when a hospital partially collapsed in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh Friday evening, a senior police official said Saturday.
"Two bodies were found under the debris of a women's ward of Kasturba Hospital in state capital Bhopal. The structure, which was nearly 50 years old, collapsed around 5 p.m. (local time) Friday when tiles were being laid on the ground floor," local administration head Nikunj Shrivastava told the media.
The 14 injured have been admitted to another wing of the same hospital, he said, adding that a probe has been ordered into the incident, the official said.
Meanwhile, the state government has announced a compensation of two lakh Indian rupees (4,000 U.S. dollars) each to families of the victims and 50,000 Indian rupees (1,000 U.S. dollars) each to those who sustained serious injuries.
Building collapse are common in India because of poor construction practices.
