Road accidents have killed at least 1,054 people in Cambodia in the first six months of this year, down 2 percent from the same period last year, according to an official report on Tuesday.

During the January-June period this year, there were 2,254 road accidents, a 4 percent decrease from the same period last year, said the report of the Ministry of Public Work and Transport.

The latest deadly road accident happened on June 18 in northern Kompong Thom province when a bus hit a car carrying a South Korean family, leaving 3 Koreans and one Cambodian dead and 7 others, including two Chinese women from Taiwan region, seriously injured.

Preap Chan Vibol, director of the Ministry's Transport Department, said that main causes of the accidents were overspeed driving, alcohol driving, and neglect driving.

"We do hope that the tragedy from road accidents will be further reduced thanks to broader law promotion and enforcement," he told Xinhua. "We'd like to appeal to all drivers to pay high attention while driving in order to ensure safety for themselves and others."

The death toll of road accidents is still the No. 1 killer in Cambodia.

Last year, traffic accidents claimed 1,894 human lives, according to the report of the Ministry of Public Work and Transport. The accidents cost the country about 300 million U.S. dollars a year.
