The Russian government demanded access to a Russian-born child adopted by a couple of lesbians in the United States, a senior official said Wednesday.

"This is another immoral trick of the Americans. Two lesbians cheated a Russian court in 2007 to adopt a Russian child," Konstantin Dolgov, the Russian Foreign Ministry's envoy for human rights, democracy, supremacy of law, wrote in his Twitter account.

The two women were divorced in 2009 and launched a lawsuit against each other demanding custody rights for the adopted child.

"This refers to psychological trauma inflicted on the child in this freaky family," Dolgov said, asking the U.S. authorities to take the issue into control and grant Russian diplomats access to the child.

He did not reveal the child's name and age.

Russia's legislature passed a law in 2012 that bans adoption of Russian children by Americans, starting from Jan. 1, 2013.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said Saturday that Russian orphans should be adopted in their homeland.
