An Armenian minister said Wednesday that Russian gas remains a better option than Iranian gas despite questions over whether the country is getting a fair deal from Russia.

Russian gas was cheaper than Iranian gas, said Energy and Natural Resources Minister Armen Movsisyan at a press conference.

Asked why Georgia paid less than Armenia for gas from Russia, Movsisyan said the price Georgia paid was lower because Russian natural gas provided to Turkey through Azerbaijan passed through Georgian territory.

Movsisyan also dismissed recent rumors that the Armenian government planned to sell Vorotan, a major hydropower plant in the country, to Russia in order to subsidize the price for gas.

"The government has not yet discussed any issues related to subsidies. We are still in the process of negotiations with the Russian side," Movsisyan said.
