Developing of unmanned combat systems for Russian armed forces lags behind the schedule, Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said Wednesday.

"All programs of developing the combat robotic equipment must be sped up approximately two-fold," Shoigu told a meeting held in Leningrad region, where he was shown samples of unmanned combat systems.

According to Shoigu's deputy Oleg Ostapenko, foreign armies have over 27,000 unmanned systems in service. In the United States, up to 30 percent of all combat vehicles will be remotely operated by 2020.

Ostapenko blamed the lack of coordination for the delay in Russia's development of unmanned combat systems.
