UAE army buys 1.42 bln USD of arms at defense fair IDEX

United Arab Emirates (UAE), host of the ongoing International Defense Exhibition and Conference (IDEX), said Monday that it has so far sealed arms purchases worth 5.2 billion Dirham (1.42 billion U. S. dollars).

U.S. Wisconsin-based defense contractor Oshkosh Corporation won the biggest deal with the Gulf country. Oshkosh will deliver to the UAE armed forces 750 Mine Resistant Ambush Protected All- Terrain Vehicles (M-ATV) worth 1.4 billion Dirham (382 million U.S. dollars).

Major General Obaid Al Ketbi, chairman of the organizing committee for the IDEX 2013, said his country also signed a 722 million-Dirham (197 million U.S.-dollar) contract with the UAE's International Golden Group to purchase its drones and integrated technical support.

Italy's Fincantieri won a deal worth 140 million Dirham (38.2 million U.S. dollars) with UAE and will provide technical support to Abu Dhabi's anti-marine ship.

The UAE's other deals were made in the software field with Germany's SAP AG and U.S. giant IBM.

The only Asian company which was awarded a contract by the UAE was South Korea's Hanwha Corporation, which will deliver to the UAE armed forces ammunition and explosives worth 56 million Dirham (15.27 million U.S. dollars).
