Denmark registered nearly 65,000 immigrants in 2014, a record high in a single year, figures from Statistics Denmark showed on Tuesday.

The country has witnessed an influx of 64,874 immigrants within the year, representing a 15 percent increase from 2013, according to the statistical agency.

Syrians were the largest immigrant group, with 5,377 settling down in Denmark in 2014, followed by Romanians at 5,281.

The agency said Syrian immigrants grew sharply in 2014, and the number more than trippled from that in 2013.

Of the total immigrants, 40,059 were from Western countries while 24,815 from non-Western countries, figures show.

Over half of all foreign nationals who immigrated to Denmark last year were between 20 and 29 years old, while only 665 of them were over the age of 60, according to Statistics Denmark.
