Agricultural and fishing production in Latin America and the Caribbean will see 17 percent growth over the next 10 years, according to a UN report released here Tuesday.

The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) issued late last month a report titled "Agricultural Outlook 2018-2027."

According to the report, crops account for 53 percent of the projected growth, cattle-breeding will account for 39 percent, and the remaining 8 percent will be driven by fishing.

Crop cultivation in the region is expected to see an annual growth rate of 1.8 percent until 2027.

Most of this growth is due to better yields, which are set to increase by 11 percent on average over the next decade, with cereals and oilseeds seeing the highest growth, according to the report.

Globally, demand for basic foods is expected to dip slightly, keeping prices low over the coming decade.

Latin America will continue to be the world's leading per capita consumer of sugar, a trend that has led to high rates of obesity.

By 2027, the region is set to be the world's second biggest agricultural producer, thanks to Brazil and Chile, major suppliers of basic foods, said the report.
