Private transportation service companies of Uber, Easy Taxi and Cabify were fined more than 6.4 million pesos (340,000 U.S. dollars), Mexican authorities said Wednesday.

The companies were fined for "probable offenses committed against the rights of consumers who use their services," the Office of the Federal Prosecutor for the Consumer (Profeco) said in a statement.

The U.S.-based Uber was fined 3.974 million pesos (209,000 dollars) for not providing an address, telephone number or other contact information for complaints and inquiries through the app about extra charges.

The Brazil-based Easy Taxi was fined 1.81 million pesos (95,000 dollars) for not taking responsibility for the misuse of client information as well as for its unclear publicity.

The Spanish ride-hailing service Cabify was fined 700,000 pesos (36,800 dollars) for "unilaterally establishing that charges would not be refunded and that periods of high demand would result in increased fares without clarifying what criteria is used to define these high demand periods."

Profeco said it hopes these fines will help to achieve "equity, certainty and judicial security" for consumers. It noted at the same time that the fines could be challenged by the companies.
