The Syrian army is close to declaring full capture of the southern provinces of Quneitra and Daraa, following over a month of military campaigns and reconciliation deals.

The Syrian state TV said Tuesday that the army was hunting down the remnants of the Islamic State (IS) militants in the town of Qusair in the Yarmouk basin region in the western countryside of Daraa.

Once the IS is defeated in that town, the entire province of Daraa would be declared free of rebels as several militant groups agreed to evacuate to the rebel-held areas in northern Syria under a Russian-backed deal.

The Syrian army has been launching a wide-scale offensive in Daraa since late last month.

The army stormed several areas in Daraa before an array of rebel groups agreed to either remain where they are after handing over their weapons or evacuate to northern Syria.

Daraa, only 100 km south of Damascus, is significant for the Syrian army due to its proximity to the Jordanian border.

During the ongoing campaign in Daraa, the Syrian army secured the entire borderline between Syria and Jordan, including the Nasib border crossing, the only official border point between Syria and Jordan that has been closed since 2015 when the rebels took it over.

As a result of the progress of the Syrian army in Daraa, and following talks between major powers, the rebels in Quneitra, near the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, agreed to hand over their weapons to the Syrian army and evacuate to the north.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) said Tuesday that the countryside of Quneitra witnessed the last evacuation of the rebels and their families.

State news agency SANA reported that 12 buses arrived Tuesday at the Ofania crossing in the northern countryside of Quneitra to transfer the rebels and their families from the town of Jubata al-Khashab to northern Syria.

They were the latest group of rebels to leave Quneitra since a deal was reached on July 20 between the rebels and the army under the mediation of the Russians.

Meanwhile, the SOHR said 9,880 rebels and their family members evacuated Quneitra and Daraa as part of the deals reached in both areas.

A day earlier, the War Media, the media unit of the Syrian army and its allies, reported the Syrian army had secured the entire borderline with the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights from Daraa to Quneitra.

The deal over Quneitra came in the light of the recent summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, who met in Finland's capital Helsinki to discuss the situation in Syria, mainly in the southern region near the Golan Heights.

Putin highlighted the need to defeat terrorists in southwestern Syria while keeping the forces of Syria and Israel separated.

He referred specifically to the treaty of 1974, which officially ended the 1973 Arab-Israeli war and designated the lines of separation between Israel and Syria.

With both Quneitra and Daraa fully secured, the Syrian army will have to deal with an IS-held pocket in the eastern countryside of Sweida province in southern Syria.

The IS militants have recently launched a wide-scale offensive on the eastern countryside of Sweida to release their pressure of the Syrian military offensive on Yarmouk basin region in Daraa.
