French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said Thursday he has a proposal for Jordan to help protect Jordan's borders.

At a press conference with Jordanian counterpart Ayman Safadi, the French top diplomat said France seeks to deepen security cooperation with Jordan and will increase its financial aid to the kingdom. He did not disclose the details of the French proposal.

He added that France will provide 1 billion euros (1.16 billion U.S. dollars) in additional aid to Jordan.

Le Drian said Jordan, which suffers from terrorist attacks like France, is a key partner in the war on terrorism.

He also said that France supports Jordan's custodianship over the holy sites in Jerusalem.

For his part, Safadi lauded the ties between the two countries, saying Jordan highly values France's support.

Safadi commended France's support to the two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, adding the two sides agreed on the need to intensify efforts to end the stalemate in the peace process.

On Syria, the minister said Syria did not ask for the reopening of the borders, and that the issue was also discussed with Russia.

Also Thursday, King Abdullah II of Jordan held a meeting with Le Drian, during which they reviewed the bilateral strategic relations and the situation in the region.

The king expressed Jordan's appreciation for the French support provided to launch many development programs in the kingdom to alleviate the huge burdens triggered by the Syrian refugee crisis on the Jordanian economy.

The talks also tackled the Mideast peace process, as the king stressed the need to intensify the efforts to restore the stalled Israeli-Palestinian talks based on the two-state solution, with an aim to establish an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.

The king also underscored the important role of the EU in this regard.

They also reviewed the developments in Syria and the efforts to reach a political solution there that would achieve stability and allow the return of Syrian refugees to their homeland.
