The Swedish government presented on Tuesday new measures to prevent future forest fires.

Swedish Television SVT reported that special attention will be paid to educating fire fighters and to the country's climate policy.

In the government's press conference, Sweden's Home Affairs and Justice Minister Morgan Johansson said the government had drawn two political conclusions about this summer's forest fires.

"Firstly, we must make sure that we continue our work to reduce and limit emissions. The other political conclusion is that we must prepare ourselves for the climate change we are now seeing. This means that we have to continue to strengthen and raise our readiness," Johansson said at the press conference.

According to the minister, the government wants to buy more equipment for fire fighters and increase their numbers to 850 by 2020 and 1,000 in the long term. In addition, the country will expand its capacity to extinguish fires from the air.

This summer has been the warmest summer in Sweden in 260 years. Extensive forest fires have raged throughout the country since mid-July, burning 25,000 hectares of forests.
