Portugal's Ministry of Internal Administration pledged to reinstate holiday bonuses on Thursday, as police officers prepared to march in protest at working conditions.

The ministry announced, via the Lusa Portuguese News Agency, that it would set aside up to 10 million euros (11.4 million U.S. dollars)to pay the bonuses again from January 2019.

The bonuses, seen by officers as a form of overtime pay for working on public holidays, were withdrawn in 2011.

The government's offer was seen to be an olive branch as officers from an array of different forces assembled in Lisbon for a protest march.

Members of the Public Security Police (PSP), the National Republican Guard (GNR), the Foreigners and Borders Service (SEF), the prison guards, the Maritime Police, and the Food and Economy Surveillance Authority (ASAE) congregated during the afternoon in the Praca Comercio square.

At 5 p.m. local time they are scheduled to march through downtown Lisbon and end their protest outside Portugal's parliament building.

Besides the withdrawal of holiday bonuses, the police have a number of other grievances. They claim that a lack of investment and recruitment means staff are overworked and suffer career burnout.

Many of these complaints stem from austerity measures imposed by the previous government.

"This government made many promises, but we're almost at the end of the legislature and we've seen nothing," said Cesar Nogueira, head of the police union's organizing committee.
