A major fire broke out Sunday inside a snacks manufacturing factory in northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, police said.

According to officials no loss of life was reported in the incident.

The fire broke out at the snacks factory in Unnao, about 65 km west of Lucknow city, the capital city of Uttar Pradesh.

Local media reports said 400 people working inside the factory were evacuated safely.

Authorities have rushed over a dozen fire tenders and many firefighters to the spot to douse flames and contain the fire.

"Today at around 9:00 a.m. (local time) a massive fire broke out inside a snacks making factory here. Efforts are underway to control the blaze from spreading further as firefighters have been pressed into service," a police official said.

"The fire has gutted the factory and three trucks that were parked inside the factory premises were also burnt."

Eyewitnesses said flames were seen leaping out of the factory and columns of thick dark smoke was billowing out.

The cause of fire was not immediately known. However, police said actual cause can be ascertained only after proper investigation.

Meanwhile, in another similar incident, fire broke out at a plastic factory in the state's Greater Noida area.

Police said the fire has been doused completely.

Chances of fire in Indian factories are usually high as owners ignore safety standards vis-a-vis fire and store fuel and combustible materials in a haphazard manner.
