Egyptians less than 18 years old represent 40.1 percent of the country's population, Egypt's official statistics authority announced in a statement on Monday.

"The number of Egyptian children (who are less than 18 years old) has reached 38.9 million, representing 40.1 percent of the total population in 2018," said the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS).

The CAPMAS pointed out that 51.7 percent of Egyptian children are males while 48.3 percent are females.

The CAPMAS statement is issued on the occasion of the World Children's Day that falls on Nov. 20 every year since it was established by the United Nations in 1954.

Egypt's total population inside the country is 97.9 million, according to the population clock fixed on top of the CAPMAS headquarters in Cairo, compared with 94.8 million people in 2017, which shows an annual increase of about 3 million people.

In 2017, the number of Egyptian expatriates reached 9.4 million and the total population inside and outside the country hit 104.2 million, according to the CAPMAS.

In late September, the CAPMAS said in a report that the number of elder Egyptians, aged 60 years or above, has exceeded 6.41 million in 2018.
