A senior Zambian government official on Friday presented a bill in parliament that seeks to regulate solid waste management in the southern African nation.
Vincent Mwale, Minister of Local Government said he presented the Solid Waste Regulation ad Management Bill for approval to parliament which will revolutionize solid waste management in the country.
"I am very confident that the bill will be supported by MPs on both sides of the House," he said in a statement posted on his Faceboook page.
The bill he said, proposes ways and means that will ensure efficiency and effectiveness in waste management right from the point of collection to dumping at well-engineered landfills for a disease free Zambia.
According to him, waste is a resource and that the bill seeks to create an enabling environment for investments in waste-to-energy solutions and recycling which are capable of creating jobs and income for young people and women in the country.
Zambia has had a problem with solid waste disposal resulting in huge uncollected garbage in major cities of the country, a situation that results in diarrhea diseases especially during the rainy season.
