In the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the police have started to use smart police stations in Dubai, as well as camels for special patrols in Abu Dhabi to reach areas that are difficult to access.

On Monday, Abu Dhabi police have integrated camels in the department of special patrols unit in an initiative launched in tandem with Emirati heritage celebrations.

The new "camel patrols" are meant to reach tough areas that are too difficult for ordinary vehicles to go through.

Known as "ships of the desert" in the Arab region, one-humped camels represent a key aspect of Emirati culture and heritage, as they helped Bedouins transport goods in the past, were used as a form of currency and a sign of wealthiness and a main source of meat, milk and even wool.

"We continue to strive in making Abu Dhabi safe and continue to employ all possible means to raise the level of security in the emirate," Abu Dhabi police chief Mohammed Khalfan al-Romaithi said in a statement.

"Abu Dhabi police have been trained in accordance with the standard of best practices to carry out their civic duties of preventing crimes and communicating with the public," he added.

A day before in Dubai, the police have opened a new smart police station (SPS) service with a "Walk-in" system in Arabian Ranches.

Dubai opened the first SPS in the world in September 2017. The "Walk-in" system is considered the third smart police station project in Dubai after the SPS and the Drive-Thru services in the emirate.

Dubai police chief Abdullah Khalifa al-Merri, who inaugurated the Walk-in SPS on Sunday, said that the new station will provide services round the clock, noting that Dubai police seek to reduce the number of visitors of police centers by 80 percent in the near future.

The station offers 25 key services in six different languages without human intervention, such as reporting crimes and traffic incidents, getting a good-conduct certificate, seeking social support for victims of family violence and others.

"The 'Walk-in' station was designed with an innovative and modern style to provide police services to the society," said Kholoud al-Marzouqi, the project manager from Dubai police.
