Ukraine on Tuesday welcomed the adoption by the UN General Assembly a Kiev-initiated resolution on "militarization" of Crimea and parts of the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov, surrounding the peninsula.

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko wrote on Facebook that the resolution confirms that the international community supports the release of the Ukrainian ships and sailors captured during the Kerch incident.

Separately, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said in a statement that the adoption of the document demonstrated that the international community supports the territorial integrity of Ukraine.

The resolution will be used to restore stability in the Black Sea and the Azov Sea regions, the ministry said.

Meanwhile, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that Russia does not agree with the resolution and regrets it was adopted, Russian Tass news agency reported.

In the resolution, published by the Permanent Mission of Ukraine to the UN, Kiev voiced grave concern over Russia's actions in Crimea, Black Sea and the Sea of Azov, saying they "pose further threats to Ukraine and undermine the stability in the broader region."

Ukraine has accused Moscow of "aggressive actions" after Russia inaugurated a bridge over the Kerch Strait, separating the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov, in May this year and started carrying out inspections of commercial ships sailing through the Kerch Strait.

Russia said the inspections of ships are aimed at ensuring security in the waters of the Azov Sea and the Kerch Strait and do not violate the international law.

On Nov. 25, Russian forces seized three Ukrainian naval ships as well as 24 sailors on board attempting to sail through the Kerch Strait, alleging that they violated the Russian border.

Relations between Russia and Ukraine have been deteriorating since Crimea was incorporated into Russia in March 2014 following a local referendum. Ukraine says the peninsula was annexed.
