Bangladesh's ruling party candidate has won the mayoral by-polls in the capital Dhaka, returning officer Abul Kashem said on Friday.

In the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) vote, Kashem said the ruling Awami League party's Atiqul Islam secured 839,302 votes while his nearest rival Jatiya Party candidate Shafin Ahmed got 55,429 votes.

Abul Kashem announced the results at the result collection and announcement center set up at Dhaka's Bangabandhu International Conference Center, also known as the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Center on Friday.

A total of five candidates including Atiqul Islam of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's Awami League contested for the mayorship in the DNCC election held on Thursday.

Ex-PM Khaleda Zia's Bangladesh Nationalist Party boycotted the elections, claiming that a free and fair election was not possible under the current government.

The total number of voters in the by-polls is around 3.03 million and 1,286 polling centres were opened.

The mayoral post fell vacant following the death of Annisul Huq on Nov. 30, 2017. He had been elected mayor of DNCC on April 28, 2015.
