Democratic Congressman Eric Swalwell said Monday he is running for president, joining a crowded field of contenders vying to unseat the incumbent Donald Trump.

"I see a country in quicksand, unable to solve problems and threats from abroad, unable to make life better for people here at home," Swalwell told a U.S. TV show, adding he is "ready to solve these problems."

The 38-year-old House member representing the state of California is expected to center his campaign on gun control. He is set to hold a town hall meeting Tuesday near Parkland, where a school shooting in February 2018 killed 17 people.

Swalwell has signaled for months that he may join the race in the 2020 presidential elections. He has served in the House of Representatives since 2013.

Swalwell's announcement came as more than a dozen presidential hopefuls have launched their campaign, including more notable names such as Senator Bernie Sanders, Kamala Harris, Elizabeth Warren, and former House member Beto O'Rourke. Former Vice President Joe Biden is said to be on the verge of joining the race.
