Greek citizens are set to welcome the New Year with optimism leaving behind the 10-year debt crisis, according to results of a survey published on Sunday's local newspaper Real News.

For the first time after a decade, the word 'hope' tops the list when participants in the opinion poll carried out by polling firm MRB are asked to describe their expectations and feelings for 2020.

Among the respondents, 41.1 percent said they view the future with hope. A year ago the percentage was only 23.1 percent.

Greece formally exited the bailout period in August 2018 and the climate is changing along improving financial indexes, although difficult challenges remain.

The 87.5 percent of participants in the survey said that they no longer fear they may lose their jobs in the next 12 months, as unemployment rates which reached about 28 percent in the years of the crisis are now dropping.

In the economy, 33.9 percent requested policies to boost social stability, justice and cohesion and 29 percent asked for more tax deductions for the middle class.

A majority, 86.2 percent of respondents, urged for more coordination among political parties to address challenges in the future.
