Naples' Federico II University will launch Italy's first-ever 5G Academy, the university announced Monday.
The pilot project, which will get underway later this year, will include 30 students for a six-month course that will guide them through the fast-developing digital economy and entrepreneurship, including a two-month field study working with local partners.
According to the university, the aim of the new program is to develop local talents and help establish Naples -- Italy's third-largest city in terms of population, behind only Rome and Milan -- as one of the country's main digital hubs, attracting companies eager to use the new 5G technologies that will allow super high-speed and high-density digital communications.
For the academy, Federico II University will team up with Telecom Italia, French consultancy Capgemini, and the Parametric Technology Corporation, a Boston-based technology services company. Each partner will play a key role in developing the skills of the students enrolled in the program.
Italy is in the midst of a rollout of 5G technologies nationwide, and the announcement comes as the Italian government announced plans to allocate around 5 million euros (5.5 million U.S. dollars) in grant money for new 5G technology initiatives -- the latest in a series of government-sponsored initiatives, according to local media.
