Freezing drizzle spread over much of the Chicago area on Wednesday morning, and the U.S. Midwest will experience snow, ice and rain in the weekend, the National Weather Service said.

A winter weather advisory was in effect for much of the Chicago area starting at 6 a.m. Wednesday, lasting until noon, according to the National Weather Service.

"Freezing drizzle is spreading into the area this morning from the west. Temperatures will take a while to warm above freezing, resulting in a few hour period of freezing drizzle and likely a light icing, especially on untreated roads and elevated surfaces," the National Weather Service said.

Motorists were warned to allow plenty of travel time and to leave extra following distance behind the car since roads are likely to be slick.

Despite the fog, ice and precipitation, Chicago's airports were not reporting significant delays as of 10:45 a.m., according to the Chicago Department of Aviation.

More than 1,000 flights were canceled Saturday morning as a winter storm hit the Chicago area with heavy winds and rain.
