Myanmar's Lower House adopted a proposal in its second day session in Nay Pyi Taw Wednesday to delay granting telecommunication service operators to foreign investors.

Such permission can only be given after a related telecommunication law is promulgated to avoid monopoly, parliament sources said.

The move came a day ahead of scheduled announcement of telecommunications service licenses to two tender-winning operators on Thursday.

The proposal submitted by MP U Myo Swe of Tanai Constituency was voted 100 percent in favor.

The government has invited public tender from local and international investors for two telecommunications operator service licenses.

In this regard, altogether 11 telecommunication companies including multi-national ones have bid for the tender.

At present, the state-run Myanmar Posts and Telecommunications (MPT) and Yatanarpon Teleport Co. Ltd are undertaking as operators for the country's communication services.

Meanwhile, MPT started to sell 350,000 first-ever low-prized sim cards across the country on monthly basis to enable ordinary people to use mobile phones at reasonable prices.

The new government launched a 4 million phone line project with 13 local private partner companies.

It is expected that there will be a surge in the number of phone subscribers following the continuous sales of low-priced SIM cards.

The ministry has reportedly planned to extend up to 10 million phone lines in 2013-14 fiscal year.
