S.Korea's online shopping posts double-digit growth in 2018

South Korea's online shopping posted a double-digit growth last year as more consumers used mobile phones to purchase various goods ranging from food to clothing and electronic product, a government report showed Friday.

Shopping in the cyberspace amounted to 111.9 trillion won (100.1 billion U.S. dollars) in 2018, up 22.6 percent from the previous year, according to Statistics Korea.

Purchase through mobile phones surged 31.7 percent to 68.9 trillion won (61.7 billion U.S. dollars) last year, making up 61.5 percent of the total online shopping.

The double-digit increase was attributable to strong demand for delivery of food services, demand for which jumped 79.6 percent in online shopping and 89.3 percent in mobile shopping, respectively.

Direct purchase from overseas online shopping mall soared 30.4 percent to 2.9 trillion won (2.6 billion U.S. dollars) in 2018.

The direct purchase of home appliances from overseas online shopping mall jumped 59.5 percent, with those for clothing and food expanding 31.7 percent and 20.6 percent each last year.
