Tokyo stocks opened flat Wednesday following Wall Street's lackluster lead overnight, with investor sentiment dented by pharmaceuticals weighing as well as data showing new orders for U.S.-made capital goods dropped in February.

As of 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average shed 0.04 point from Tuesday to 21,505.27.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, edged 2.72 points, or 0.17 percent lower, at 1,608.97.

Marine transportation and securities house issues comprised notable early advancers, while oil and coal product and farm and fishery-linked issues comprised those that declined the most in the opening minutes after the morning bell.
