Imported car sales in South Korea posted a double-digit reduction last month on lack of supply, industry data showed Wednesday.

The number of foreign luxury vehicles registered here was 18,078 in March, down 31.5 percent from a year earlier, according to the Korea Automobile Importers and Distributors Association (KAIDA).

It was attributed to the shortage of new models and the changed emission standard leading to a delayed approval process.

The market share of imported vehicles in the domestic market declined to 13.65 percent in March, the lowest in 27 months since December 2016.

In the January-March quarter, the imported car sales tumbled 22.6 percent to 52,161 units compared with the same quarter of last year.

German automaker Mercedes Benz kept the top post by selling 4,442 vehicles in March, but the reading was down 44 percent from a year ago.

Automobile sales by BMW, the second-biggest foreign carmaker here, plunged 57.5 percent over the year to 2,999 units in March.

The best-selling model in March was E300, produced by Mercedes Benz, with the sale of 946 units. It was followed by Benz's E300 4Matic sedan, of which sale was 824 units.
