The result is remarkable because the film was released on a Tuesday, which is both a weekday and a day of half-price tickets in Chinese cinemas.
The movie has also received widespread acclaim, boasting a rating of nine out of ten on China's biggest film service platform Mtime.
Completed in 2010, the film waited more than three years before getting approval for release. But the anticipation has been worth it as it's now getting both critical and popular acclaim.
