"The Amazing Spider-Man 2" ruled China's box office by taking in 153 million yuan (about 24.84 million U.S. dollars) in the week ending May 18.

The action-adventure, which opened in Chinese theaters on May 4, has earned 505 million yuan, according to a China Film News report on Tuesday.

Second spot went to Zhang Yimou's "Coming Home", which raked in 83 million yuan in its opening weekend. The romance, starring Gong Li and Chen Daoming, is Zhang's first film since he joined Le Vision Pictures last May.

It was thought "Coming Home" would knock Spider Man off the top spot, with the superhero story nearing the end of its screening run.

"The Great Hypnotist", a thriller starring "Lost in Thailand" lead Xu Zheng, came in third with 44.8 million yuan in the week.

Fourth and fifth places were taken by "My Old Classmate", a love story between two university classmates, with 39 million yuan, and "Hummingbird", with 14 million yuan, respectively.
