The 2020 World Conference on VR (virtual reality) Industry kicked off Monday in Nanchang, capital of east China's Jiangxi Province.

Themed "new opportunities, new prospects," this year's conference focuses on the key and common problems in VR industry development, discusses industry trends and solutions, and illustrates the latest achievements in the field.

The two-day event is being held both online and offline this year. Some 100 representatives from 18 countries and regions will discuss the VR industry ecosystem, entertainment, tourism, healthcare, and other fields in person or via video link.

More than 160 exhibitors, including Huawei and Microsoft, have presented their products and projects on VR, AR (augmented reality), and MR (mixed reality) technologies in an expo that covers an area of 30,000 square meters.

A list of China's top 50 VR firms was unveiled during the conference, with electro-acoustic components manufacturer Goertek, Beijing Baidu Netcom Science and Technology Co. Ltd., and HTC Communication Co., Ltd. topping the list.

Co-hosted by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) and the provincial government of Jiangxi, the conference has been held each year in Nanchang since 2018.

During the conferences in the previous two years, a total of 261 projects were inked, worth 128.4 billion yuan (about 19 billion U.S. dollars).

As of Oct. 8, signing agreements of 78 projects had been reached involving 61.25 billion yuan for this year's conference, said Wu Zhongqiong, deputy governor of Jiangxi Province.

Zhang Yong, CEO of Alibaba Group, said that VR and many aspects of the society are changing, and many scenarios in science fiction are becoming a reality. Alibaba, for instance, has also applied VR technology in fields of education, e-commerce, tourism, healthcare, and other fields.

Wang Zhijun, vice minister of MIIT, said the ministry would help facilitate the high-quality development of China's VR industry, accelerating the industrial integration of VR with other technologies, such as 5G and artificial intelligence. It would also help with promoting industrial agglomeration and deepening international cooperation to achieve win-win results in the global market.

China has witnessed a maturing and expanding VR industry as the country pushes for the high-quality development and extensive application of new technologies. According to the MIIT, China's VR market will amount to 54.45 billion yuan by 2021. Enditem
